Ecosoil was established in 2005 by Jako Pieterse. Previously he was a fruit farm manager in the Western Cape where he was responsible, out of ignorance, for the deterioration of the soil over a period of ten years. During this period a gradual increase in pest and disease was experienced that escalated to a stage where pesticides where unable to give effective control. After realising his mistake, he started using compost tea and other biological products and was soon able to cut fertiliser and pesticide use. In the subsequent 5 years he was able to lower nitrogen applications by 70% and a dramatic decrease in weevil, nematodes, snails and fungal diseases were seen in two years. He also started a study group on sustainable farming (www.sustainablefarm.co.za) in 2003.
Soon after its inception Ecosoil became a market leader in compost tea systems and related technology in South Africa. We operate nationwide and have depots in the Western Cape (Grabouw); Limpopo (Tzaneen, Nylstroom): Mpumalanga (Kiepersol) and Eastern Cape (Kareedouw). We will be opening depots in the Free State and Kwazulu-Natal soon.
